Idea Behind WINT, an AI-powered Water Detection and Conservation System #
An Israeli Engineer, Moshe Ravid came home after his work to find his house flooded due to a bursting water pipe. After mopping up, he immediately went to work on a solution to prevent water leakage and waste from happening again. He created an AI-powered water meter called WINT that integrates into existing pipe systems.
According to Yaron Dycian, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at WINT Water Intelligence, this AI-powered water meter can learn the normal water flow, detect when things go wrong, and shut off the malfunctioning parts before any damage is done.
WINT system communicates with the cloud over a cellular network to deliver real-time water usage analytics and sends alerts through its app in case of any anomalies. The company’s technology was launched in 2012. It was originally designed for homes but started targeting companies that are looking to prevent damage and waste less water. Nine years and many algorithms later, this AI-powered water leak detection and conservation system are gaining recognition for its water-saving tech.
The company expanded into the United States and Europe in 2019, and their technology has been adopted by the companies such as Mastercard, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard (HP).
What’s the Cost of Water Damage? #
As per the Association of British Insurers, water damage is the most common household property claim in the United Kingdom (UK). An average burst pipe claim costs about ?9,000 or $13,000.
Home monitors Phyn Plus Smart Water Assistant + ShutOff by Belkin and Flo by Moen Smart Water Security System are some other water-saving techs available in the market. WINT stands out due to its ability to deal with water leakage in large-scale office buildings, factories, and construction sites.
The amount of damage caused by water in a building can cost enormous loss of precious resources and money. Dycian tells CNN Business, ‘A pipe breaks on the 20th floor, water trickles down and anything in its wake is really destroyed. We have customers who have lost tens of millions of dollars in a single event like this.?
This problem is quite familiar for the UK-based construction company Mace that built London icons like the London Eye and The Shard. Paul Connolly, Technical Director for Mace says, ‘We’ve had several issues around leaking pipes in the final throes of construction that caused millions of pounds worth of damage.? Beyond the financial cost, the damage to the reputation and rising insurance premiums forced the company to look for solutions.
Today, the incorporation of a WINT water detection and conservation system into each new Mace construction site has helped their bottom line and sustainability goals. Typically, WINT saves users about 20 to 25% in water consumption.
On average, buildings waste about 25 to 30% of water consumed. For instance, a building with 100 toilet stalls will have an average of three leaky valves at any point in time. These alone can cost around $30,000 to $40,000 in water every year.
In one such case, a malfunctioning cooling tower was pouring $1,000 of water down the drain every day, which cost about half a million dollars a year. And that went on for around two and half years until WINT was installed. So, it is that little thing that nobody notices which results in a massive waste of water, and not all people are aware of it.
Also, it has the cost of damage, such as on a high-end block of apartments in New York, Manhattan. There was a leak on the 19th floor over the weekend, about a month and a half before delivery to the tenants, where the water was falling down the floors. With nobody around, the water leaked right down to the ground floor, causing damage to the property worth $30 million. Moreover, the builders had to pay $80 million in delayed delivery compensation.
It is not just the construction market that is feeling the pain of water damage, as it also affects the property market. For instance, a building of an insurance company in Israel leaked to the 11th floor, on the weekend, and the building was decimated. It resulted in thousands of computers getting ruined and other damages that amounted to nearly $3 million, and the management has to be relocated.
What About Saving Water? #
As water supplies are under pressure worldwide, it is more significant than ever to cut down on consumption and wastage. Even a slow or small leak from the water pipes can result in wasting a lot of precious water. According to American Water Resources, a 3-millimeter crack in a pipe can waste about 946 liters or 250 gallons of water per day.
Dycian says, ‘About 25% of the water that enters any building is wasted through small things such as a dripping faucet or a running toilet. The average leaks in US households alone account for around 1 trillion gallons of water wasted each year.?
So, there is water scarcity and there is a huge business problem that causes massive damages and water wastage in the form of leaks in the buildings. The best part of WINT is that it manages to solve both problems.
How Does WINT Detects and Prevents Water Wastage and Property Damage? #
Water damage in building construction is the silent killer resulting in water wastage and property damage. Water is an increasingly scarce and valuable resource, a reality that most big companies embrace sustainable practices. WINT device uses AI to detect any water leaks in the buildings, thus helps to conserve water and prevent property damage in both commercial and government buildings.
We have already seen the cost and destruction caused by leaks from the taps, and toilets to hidden pipes and water towers. WINT’s AI-based solutions use sophisticated technology to identify the normal water usage patterns through the water detection devices that are placed throughout the building. After it gets deployed, each device starts using ML to understand and analyze the local flow patterns that will differ from location to location and season to season.
This process will take about three to four weeks, and then the devices will communicate with a processor in the cloud. After establishing the normal patterns, they can detect anomalies and provide real-time alerts to the staff on their smartphones, pinpointing the exact location and nature of the water leak.
If the system detects serious leaks and bursts, the valves will shut off the water supply, thus preventing wastage. If the staff knows the event is normal, they can use a remote control to override the system. Further, it sends detailed monthly water usage reports to managers so they can be monitored and adjusted accordingly.
Perry Sanders, the Director of Facilities at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada have reported that after installing WINT they have had already saved $36,000 on their initial investment of $48,000. They use 6.5 million gallons of water each month and this AI-powered system was remarkably accurate in detecting hidden leaks that the staff couldn’t find.
Dycian says, ‘With any automated detection system that uses AI, there is always a challenge of optimizing detection while avoiding false alerts. They also monitor systems off-site, which was quite lucky for a Fortune 200 company that had this system installed. Everyone forgot about it, following a change of staff in the maintenance team. A year later, alerts started firing off, the leaks started small and increased to a few tens of gallons an hour, while the staff paid no attention.?
WINT escalated the problem up the site’s command chain until it reached the Vice President (VP). By this time, the water leak went from 40 gallons to 25 cubic meters an hour. Till they found the cause of the water leak- a burst pipe, about a thousand cubic meters of water, equal to half a swimming pool at Olympics, had leaked below the building, displacing concrete slabs. The company estimated that if this had been left unchecked, it could have caused them around $6.5 million worth of damage.
Bottom Line #
WINT Water Intelligence is currently expanding beyond Israel to the US, UK, Singapore, and Australia. They are expecting demands to grow as they have a sustainability office that shows the amount of savings that their AI-powered water meter can provide by reducing the water consumption and the same as what you pay to get this device installed. Moreover, it is an ongoing service fee instead of a big upfront payment.
WINT helps to reduce water consumption by 25%. helps the company to cut ongoing costs and minimize the environmental footprint- as it is a sustainability solution that pays for itself. Moreover, it prevents water leaks from turning into disasters that can cause massive damage to the property and disrupt the businesses. So, using the WINT will provide damage protection for free while conserving one of the most precious resources on the Earth- water.
