It is a surreal feeling when you know that you have secured a job offer at a company. Especially if you have gone through an extensive interview process. All your anxiety is put to rest when the company gives you a call or sends over a mail declaring you have secured the job.
While it calls for a celebration, one must be prompt in responding to the employers about taking up the job. It is not as simple as, “yes, I will take up the job.” The company has just invested in you, and you need to show them that you are thankful and will do your best. Give the acceptance letter the same importance as your resume or cover letter.
Verbal Acceptance #
Several companies have two ways of going about letting their candidate know that they have secured the job. One- they call them up and announce the news. This is more informal and needs to follow up with a written confirmation. We will go to that in a second. When the call bearing good news is on, be sure to be thankful for the opportunity. Tell them you are excited to work with them and look forward to joining them on board. A word of caution, do not go overboard with the excitement.
Once the news is delivered, the chances are that the employer might talk to you in detail about the designation, working hours, salary, etc. Discuss in detail and be open to negotiation. They will most likely also brief you about the next few steps, signing the contracts and other paperwork. Listen to the instructions carefully and ask questions if you have any.
Once the oral acceptance has been given, it is just a matter of time until you receive the actual offer letter.
Written Confirmation #
To open your email and to read the first line, “Congratulations! We are happy to inform you that you have secured the job..” is a feeling unmatched.
But now the real game begins.
If you are choosing to accept the offer, reiterate some of the terms in your acceptance letter. For example, “Thank you for the opportunity to join an esteemed company. I will be glad to take up the position of XXX from Monday, xxx.” This way, the employer is aware that you have read the terms of the letter.
Continue with any questions that you have, and conclude with best wishes. Be sure to make the subject line clear and say, “Job Offer Acceptance- Your Name.”
Make sure to proofread your response to avoid any errors- big or small.

Tips
Now that the official acceptance letter has been submitted, make sure to prepare for the first day. Pre-sign all the documents and wait till the background verification, etc., is done. If they have sent some orientation material, make sure to go through them. Be prepared and bring the same excitement and energy to your new role.
When should you accept the offer? #
It is always advisable to respond to job offers within 24 hours. But always make sure to acknowledge the mail. If you have decided to accept the offer, then there is no reason to delay.
