It has been enabled in a number of major distributions, including Ubuntu 20.10, Fedora 30, and RHEL 8.2. However, if you are aware that any of your customers are using an unusual configuration, please verify and advise them or the bistro vendor to change CONFIG DEBUG INFO BTF=y and CONFIG DEBUG INFO BTF MODULES=y to avoid future misery.

API testing during development is mainly done through unit testing and functional testing in the codebase. For a NodeJS API, the most used test libraries are Mocha / Chair and Jest. However, these tests often have a scope limited to the internal functioning of our API.

The API Test via Postman allows you to test the functioning of your API both internally and with third-party APIs. Postman is a collaborative API development platform. It allows:

send REST, SOAP, or GraphQL requests to request your APIs
simulate endpoints (mocking)
Generate and publish your API documentation
Monitor the performance of your APIs
Work collaboratively with workspaces
Automate your API tests

It is this exciting aspect that interests us more particularly. Postman organizes a test suite in what they call a collection. A collection is a series of queries (REST, SOAP, or GraphQL) linked together, sharing the same context. Context is shared throughout the run. For example, it includes cookies placed by a previous request and variables created on the fly. This is particularly useful for setting up web sessions and testing query chains that have dependencies.

For each request, Postman offers to run prerequisites and a test script. In this last script, we will add checks on the response obtained (assertion): This is the testing part of the tool.

The following two diagrams are taken from the postman documentation and illustrate the flow between prerequisites, request, response, and test script.

These prerequisites and test scripts are in Javascript, and everything relies on a NodeJS database for execution. This provides flexibility to share variables between queries in the same collection.

Postman offers a thick client and a web client to manage and run its collections. It is also possible to run them continuously with the Newman tool. The proposal facilitates this to retrieve its collections with an API and facilitate integration into a CI.

Experience shows that securing APIs is a recipe based on four ingredients that must be carefully dosed. Several security measures and good development practices are available to developers and operations teams to cover the traditionally targeted risk areas by an attacker:

The attack surface expands with APIs becoming a fundamental part of modern application development. Gartner estimates that by 2022, fraudulent use of APIs will be “the most common attack vector and lead to data breaches in corporate web applications.”

The downside of public web APIs is that they come with risks. By design, they allow outsiders to access data. Behind each API hides an endpoint, namely the server (and its databases), which response to requests.

Endpoints are similar to web servers connected to the Internet and carry the same risks. The difference is that many websites generally employ some form of access control, much less so with APIs.

In the worst-case scenario, it’s not just the data that is at risk, but the infrastructure as well. Vulnerable APIs are the ideal starting point for various network hijacking attacks. A practical (most often mufti-level) attack can potentially compromise sensitive data, whether it is personal identifying information or intellectual property.

Best Practices For Ensuring API Security #

In addition to the risk mitigation measures described above, adopting some basic security practices, and enforcing well-established security controls, are critical if organizations plan to share their APIs publicly. The following principles must be emphasized in particular:

Safety: API security is a priority to integrate into APIs during their development.

Maintain API inventory: The company must conduct perimeter analyses to identify and inventory its APIs and then organize them with DevOps teams.

Use strong authentication and authorization: The authentication process of APIs does not enforce authentication (as is often the case with private APIs, exclusively for internal use).

Knowing that APIs provide a point of entry to corporate databases, the enterprise must strictly control its access. Where possible, solutions based on robust and proven authentication and authorization mechanisms such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect should be used.

Apply the principle of least privilege: A subject (user, process, program, system, device) should not be granted access rights more significant than those necessary to perform a given function.

Encrypt traffic using TLS: For companies with APIs that regularly exchange sensitive data (login credentials, social security numbers, credit card information, medical or banking information, etc.), TLS encryption is essential.

Delete information that is not intended to be shared: APIs are primarily designed for developers. This is why they often contain keys, passwords, and other information that must be removed before being made available to the public. However, this step is sometimes neglected. Companies should integrate analytical tools into their DevSecOps processes to limit accidental exposure of confidential information.

Do not expose more data than necessary: APIs should not return more information than required to perform their function. It is also essential to apply API-level data access controls, monitor the data, and obfuscate confidential information contained in the response.

Validate the input data: Input data should never be passed from APIs to endpoints without prior validation.

Limit traffic: Setting a threshold beyond which requests will be rejected (for instance, 10K requests per day per account) can prevent denial of service attacks.

APIs were quickly established as the preferred method of building applications, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, in the face of continuously evolving, changing application development methods and pressures for innovation, some users have not fully utilized the potential risks of making their APIs publicly available.

What is API Architecture? #

An API architecture or format is one through which APIs are able to function. It is a set of structures, rules, and restraints governing API operations.

Years earlier, businesses deployed service-oriented architectures (SOA) to connect internal systems; however, SOAs were not the most effective way beyond the enterprise level. To that end, special API-based architectures were designed for quicker development and reduced governance.

Today, with an increasing number of mobile applications and a massive digital transformation, the need for a set of protocols that can be modified as per requirement and deliver instant services to customers has substantially increased.

There are 4 major types of API architectures that are fairly well-known — SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), REST (Representational State Transfer), RPC (Remote Procedural Call), and GraphQL. A fifth one, gRPC is currently doing the rounds and is touted to be a part of most future API scenarios.

A Look into the History of API Architecture, and its Evolution over the Years #

Before the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) was developed, in the 1970s, software applications were more like a collection of subroutines performing specific tasks. APIs did exist even then, only, in the form of simple protocols supporting distributed computing networks spanning a small area. APIs evolved since the advent of the World Wide Web and continue to dominate the Internet today.

Tracing the history of web-based APIs, the first one in this regard could be Salesforce’s web-based sales automation tool launched in the late 1990s? this application, in fact, is said to have kickstarted the SaaS (Software as a Service) revolution. With the absence of a proper framework in place, businesses adopted service-oriented architectures (SOA), as mentioned before. Conventional SOA however, was restricted to an organizational level. The need for efficient protocols continued to grow and the first major effort in this area manifested in the form of CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) launched in 1991.

CORBA basically separated codes running on two different machines (client and server) and focused on making remote process calls from the client to the server by means of a code-connecting proxy. The client then waited for a response and ran his code to translate the same. Although this worked for a while, the need for updates quickly became apparent, which further led to the advent of SOAP.

SOAP was invented in 1998, enabling clients to invoke web services and obtain responses on different platforms and languages. REST followed soon after, in 2000, after which businesses welcomed GraphQL in 2015. Presently, organizations use REST and GraphQL as per API requirements, while efforts are being taken simultaneously to come up with even more efficient API architectures.

RPC is more like an age-old client-server model from the 1960s and is still a commonly used architecture, although it’s considerably older and has undergone several changes over the years.

The paragraphs below elaborate on some of these architectures in detail.

Types of API Architectures #

#1 REST (Representational State Transfer) #

One of the most popular API architectures there is, REST relies on an efficient client-server model separating front-end and back-end API. As the name suggests, it means ‘stateless?, i.e., no information is stored between requests. REST APIs, also called RESTful APIs, have the ability to operate via intermediate systems such as load balancers, but they can also directly communicate with a server.

REST API architecture requires that no client context be stored on the server in between requests. Clients can cache responses with REST, however, a REST API response must state if it can be cached or not. Developers use standard HTTP protocols such as PUT, GET, POST, and DELETE, to query resources represented by URIs.

#2 RPC (Remote Procedural Call) #

There are 2 types to be considered here? the XML-RPC and the JSON-RPC. The former uses XML for the call encoding process, while the latter uses JSON. These protocols are designed to call methods and are more about actual actions rather than resources. RPCs demand that developers execute specific blocks of code on another system.

An important pointer to remember about RPC is that it is protocol-agnostic, that is to say, it can be executed in tandem with other protocols as well. Unfortunately, the increase in the usage of non-standard procedure names in all existing RPC APIs leads to overburdening developers.

Although a well-used model, RPC APIs are limited as far as security and capabilities are concerned, which is why their usage is not as much as REST or SOAP. They are mostly used for basic process requests in internal systems.

#3 SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) #

SOAP has been used to build APIs for a very long time, and it usually does so with XML. This architecture lends support to an array of communication protocols such as TCP, HTTP, and SMTP. This protocol is independent and enables developers to write APIs in different ways, with added features and functionality. The SOAP specification includes an extensibility model, message construct, processing model, and protocols binding rules.

The SOAP approach helps define the construction of SOAP messages and layout the way a SOAP message is processed. It is a clearly defined standard, very structured, and tightly controlled. Since it clearly defines what must be included in messages and how they should be sent, SOAP APIs are more secure. That is why they are more often than not, implemented for internal data transfers with high security.

#4 GraphQL API Style #

One of the more recent finds in the API architecture, GraphQL is gaining more and more precedence as opposed to the other protocols. GraphQL helps clients describe their data requirements in a JSON format. Not to mention, it is designed in such a way that it can work with any kind of database.

In essence, the goal of GraphQL is to provide control over data to the API consumer. Not only does this enable them to describe their data requirements perfectly, it also optimizes the overall experience, resolving queries from the customer standpoint. GraphQL is thus, more of an API consumer-centric approach.

GraphQL offers clients writing and reading access to the data; clients can send data to the server and request data as well. Furthermore, GraphQL offers a subscription mechanism for opposite communication, i.e., servers can notify clients too.

#5 gRPC #

Google developed gRPC as a data exchange technology and made it available as an open-source later on. Similar to GraphQL, gRPC can be executed in numerous languages and platforms. It doesn’t use text-based data formats though; it deploys the Protocol Buffers binary format, which mandates that in a gRPC setting, both the client and server have access to the same schema definition.

Yet another benefit that this API architecture boasts of is that it supports asynchronous, bidirectional data exchange, given that it is based on the HTTP/2 protocol. For the unversed, under HTTP/2, when a client starts a connection to a target server, the connection stays open until either party closes it. That is to say, gRPC enables requests and responses to moving through the connection as well as the data streams.

gRPC undoubtedly is fast and efficient and one of the best API architectures out there. Experts vouch that it is likely to emerge as the standard for data exchange on the backend. Besides, the bidirectional streaming capabilities offered by HTTP/2 enable the gRPC protocol to be used in situations where the other architectures cannot be deployed.

API Architecture: A Glimpse into the Future #

From SOAP to REST and RPC to GraphQL, API architectures have come a long way. With improved standardization in tooling, API development has become much simpler; however, the expectations from API architectures have increased as well. APIs are now moving ahead of the client-server synchronous communication mechanism and are increasingly adopting newer communication patterns. Event-driven API protocols are the latest in the API architecture ecosystem. With their help, clients need not comb servers for changes; even servers send asynchronous events to the client post any change the client may want.

Using service mesh architecture is also one of the latest trends in this arena. This format enables API developers to implement internal structures between the underlying microservices environment hosting the APIs. Thereby, API developers can deploy common functionality that is being hosted on another API. This kind of architecture enables better code reuse of the entire API framework.

The engine consists of 2 main components:

Memory Heap- This is where the memory allocation takes place.

Call Stack - Stack frames are here whenever your code is executed.

The Runtime #

Browsers have APIs, which you as a JavaScript developer must have used. For example “setTimeout”. The engine does not provide you with these APIs. Now we’re going to find out where these APIs come from.

Apart from the engine, there are also a lot of things called Web APIs that the browser gives us such as AJAX, DOM, setTimeout, and more.

Next comes the event loop and callback queue.

The Call Stack #

It is a well-known fact that JavaScript is a single-threaded programming language which means it has a single call stack. It will do one thing at a time.

Let’s look at an example.

LIFO: Here the full form of LIFO is ‘Last In, First Out?. This means that the function that is pushed last in the stack will be the first to pop out when the function returns. Now we would like to say that the call stack operates by the data structure principle of LIFO.

Look at this code sample in which the LIFO demonstration is happening. Here the stack trace error is being printed to the console.

Here it is clearly visible that the stack is starting from firstFunction() which was last inserted inside the stack. firstFunction() is the first to pop out and throws an error. After that secondFunction() followed by thirdFunction (). When the code is executed the first function to be pushed inside the stack is the thirdFunction().

Temporarily store: As soon as the function is called(invoked), the things that are pushed into the call stack to form the stack frame are the function, its parameters, and all variables. A memory location is created in the stack and this is what we call the stack frame.

Manage function invocations (calls): The call stack contains all records of the position of each stack frame. That is, which next function will be executed and it will also have to be removed after execution. Thus the code execution in JavaScript becomes synchronous.

To understand what is synchronous, suppose you are standing at the cash point of a grocery store and you will be attended only after the person standing in front of you is attended by the cashier.

This is what we define as “manage function invocations”.

How does the call stack handle function calls?

For this, we have created a sample code of a function which calls another function. Please see below:

Let us now see what happens when the code is run.

As soon as the secondFunction() is executed, an empty stack frame is formed which is the main entry point of the program.
Now the second function() will call the first function(), which is pushed into the stack.
As a result, firstFunction() will return “Hello I am Jonathan” to the console.
firstFunction() has done its job and it will be ready to pop off.
Now the execution order will target secondFunction().
secondFunction() will print “End secondFunction”.
The secondFunction() will pop off and clear the memory.

Stack overflow #

If the recursive function does not find an exit point, a stack overflow will occur. The browser can accommodate the maximum stack calls, after which it will throw a stack error.

Flutter Widgets supports all platform differences such as icons, fonts, scrolling and navigation etc. Flutter code is compiled to native ARM machine code using Dart’s native compiler. Since native apes don’t use much memory, native apes will give better performance. Compute-intensive tasks will also be executed faster in native apes. React Is A Library #

Tree Reconciliation Algorithm #

All the operations you perform in the DOM happen in a single thread, and this thread is responsible for everything that happens in the browser. It involves a lot of things like typing, scrolling, resizing etc. It simply means that as soon as you perform any expensive operation, you will get a hanky experience.

You need to keep in mind that your application should always perform minimal operations and batch them wherever possible. React targets this concept.

When we render a tree of elements in React, React first creates a virtual representation of it and keeps it in memory. Now it performs DOM operations so that the tree can be viewed in the browser.

If you want to update this tree, React will create a new virtual representation of the updated tree. This means that there are two versions of the same tree in React. Now the thing to see is that React will not discard what React has rendered before.

That is version 1. Instead, it will compare both the virtual versions that are in memory.

While computing the difference between the two, it will look at which sub-tree is to be updated. React will update only those sub-trees in the browser. This is called the tree reconciliation algorithm and is very effective for working with the DOM tree of the browser.

Let me tell you that a ‘virtual" browser is more friendly than a real browser. The DOM API is very difficult to work with. This is how React communicates with the DOM in your place.

The biggest advantage of React is for a developer who has very good JavaScript skills as it does not take much time to understand the React API. When you have to iterate over an object, you do it using Object.keys. With this method, you will get only an array of object keys.

But if you use Object.entries you will get the keys as well as the values.

2. String replaceAll Method #

The replaceAll() method will match the pattern in the string, then replace it with the replacement provided by it.

3. === instead of == #

“==” is for automatic conversion when you need it whereas “===” does not support conversion.

“===” compares value and type, and is faster than “==”.

4. Typeof #

typeof returns the data type of the operand. The return data type is in the form of a string and represents the primitive type of a variable.

JavaScript provides the Object() function by default.

The point to be noted here is that here Object is a function and not an object. Yes, there is an anonymous object inside it. If you access its prototype property you will get a reference to it.

The Object.prototype method has many more methods and properties such as toString() and valueOf().

Let’s reiterate one more point quickly if a function is the value of a property of an object, it is called a method. Simply put, a method is the property of an object.

One of the important properties of Object.prototype for which I have explained to you so far is the constructor. The constructor refers to the “object” function.

6. Lexical Scope #

The scope in which the function scope accesses the variables from the parent scope is called lexical scope. The function is declared after the variable declaration. The child function is lexically bound to the parent function. Child functions can access variables from their parent scope to global scope but vice verse is not possible.

Definition space is lexical scope, and not the invocation space. userName is defined in the global environment, so its lexical scope is the global scope.

7. Find the elapsed time between two function calls #

The time name is passed as a parameter to the time method.

The same parameter is also passed to the timeEnd method.

Last summer, SpaceX embarked on the first US-manned spaceflight in almost a decade. What made this event even more historic is that it successfully took NASA astronauts into orbit on a privately-manned spacecraft and delivered them to the International Space Station.

As rockets like the Falcon 9 follow the same ethos as missile technology, the US government treats information about its inner workings as classified information. So it’s a challenge to find specific details about the hardware and software used inboard the spacecraft.

But by scouring through the internet and Reddit, we can get a pretty good idea about what they rely on to achieve their objectives. For example, we know that SpaceX’s Falcon rockets leverage software packages closely related to programs running on your devices.

What Kind of Computer Does SpaceX Use Inboard the Falcon 9? #

In a recent session of Reddit’s Ask Me Anything (AMA), NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley stated that they used Google Chrome whenever they tapped on the touchscreens that controlled the Crew Dragon Capsule.

The computers used on rockets are custom built to withstand harsh conditions. These include intense heat and significant vibration. When the Falcon 9 enters the earth’s orbit, the hardware must cope with a tremendous amount of heat and cold that can be anywhere from 120? C to -150? C.

However, temperatures alone don’t pose the most significant threat. Electronic equipment inboard the spacecraft must withstand the radiation like high energy particles ejected from the sun, particles from outside our solar system, and the earth’s magnetic field.

This scenario threatens to cause what’s known as a bit flip. This phenomenon occurs when high energy particles strike the memory or the processors inboard space computers. So if they hit the memory, for example, it creates a situation where a “0” becomes “1” and vice verse. This, in turn, corrupts the specific component of the memory.

As a result, you’d expect the company to deploy costly radiation-hardened components. Still, SpaceX has consistently used off-the-shelf parts because it isn’t necessary when you follow what’s known as a radiation-tolerant design.

While we’re not sure about what kind of machines they have now, a few years ago, the Falcon 9 was equipped with three flight computers for each of its engines, and a triple redundancy computer equipped with 30 processors.

As these computers don’t leverage their multicore processor capabilities, they perform computations of two cores separately and compare results. This means that these three flight computers (with dual-core processors) operate as six independent computers that regularly verify each others’ calculations.

So if one of the spacecraft’s computers succumbs to radiation, it’ll put out a different value detected by the other computers. The malfunctioning processor is then rebooted automatically, preventing further errors.

Then in what’s known as a re-sync, it copies the other processors’ memory, executes the same programs, and matches other systems’ execution inboard. In the unlikely event that all three computers malfunction because of radiation, the other systems inboard that allow the triple redundancy model will kick in.

What Software Does SpaceX Use Inboard the Falcon 9? #

Each of the company’s rockets and satellites use a variation of the Linux Operating System (OS). This is very similar to the OS that powers billions of Android mobile phones. The Linux OS runs on almost all of the company’s desktops and vehicles.

SpaceX has launched approximately 32,000 Linux computers into space to power the Starling internet. The company also launches 60 internet-beaming Starling satellites with a load of 4,000 stripped-back Linux computers every month.

This initiative aims to build a robust global constellation of spacecraft that delivers high-speed broadband coverage from orbit.

Why is Linux the go-to choice for space travel?

SpaceX leverages Linux as it allows its engineers to use the robust applications that come with it and streamline the development process. Programmers at the company are known to use C++, a popular coding language with a large C++ ecosystem.

When developers utilize existing tools like gcc (C and C++ compiler) and gdb (debugger), it negates the need to build new software. However, the company also uses a graphical programming tool that runs on Windows called LabView.

This allows the engineers on the ground to track critical metrics and better visualize the telemetry they receive from the Falcon 9 during its interstellar journey.

This approach makes it easy to build data analysis algorithms, integrate measurement hardware, and represent complex logic on diagrams. Finally, SpaceX also uses Matlab on base as an analysis tool.

The Dragon spacecraft, on the other hand, also runs Linux with custom software written in C++. However, the touchscreen interface is rendered leveraging Chromium and JavaScript.

The organizations have now been able to store massive data generated by there organization in some kind of data lakes, hubs or on-premise / public cloud. With big data comes the big responsibility to manage, organize, secure the data.

Over the years, big enterprises gather hundreds of data hubs and the data becomes disparate to a level that you cannot use it. This means the organization has data, in fact, lots of data? say big data. This data being big is still of no value as it is incapable of driving business results. According to Forester, 74% of firms say they want to be ‘data-driven,? but only 29% are successful at connecting data to business value. In 2020 Industry maturity is at a stage where storing the data has been accomplished for many organizations but drawing meaningful insights into that data in a timely fashion(real-time) is still a challenge.

In big organizations, the data is collected by multiple channels and the same data can have different fields and different definitions based on the source of origin.

To date, there is no defined way to automate the meaning of data in real-time. Many big companies have tried to solve this approach. The most innovative solution today in the market are podium data, waterline data. IBM is also a key player. The approach these companies use is to detect the headers of the data and capture the data type of the data. Sometimes it would even use a bit of NLP to come to a potential accurate meaning of data. But, most of the time, the business meaning of the data has to be manually mapped. Data discovery platforms would detect the headers to a certain level and then will provide a semi-automated way to define the data. Manual intervention to define the business definitions of each field is still a common practice in today’s world of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The most innovative technology companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft ( recently ) growth is dependent on their ability to utilize the data of their customers in almost near real-time and also to handle the data securely is a critical part. As this is the secret sauce to their individual success story, the methodology is different for different companies. Tools might be available as open-source but it is difficult to understand — How they do it end to end?

Being an open-source technologist and an innovator, I try to solve these kinds of problems for the industry and share.

Like the famous Eureka, one day I thought why not create open-source algorithm ideation for data discovery that can be utilized by data teams around the globe.

Outline of the Data Discovery Algorithm: #

So consider the piece of code sitting between the source of the data and the destination of the data. Call it a data discovery filter. This filter fundamentally eliminates the need for costly ETL/ELT & Metadata management Tools and the implementation nightmare that a CEO or CTO goes through when doing digital transformation or legacy modernization in a complex organization.

The data is filtered in 2 stages or states: First Stage ( Data Discovery and Standardization ) and Second stage ( Change Data Discovery & Distribution standards )

First Stage Methodology: #

The first stage is when the data discovery filter detects the data. The Algorithm first detects the type of the file Is the data coming from a database( tabular) or is an image, audio, video, document. It can even be a script, geospatial data or an API. After the data file and type are detected the data is scanned to just capture the header and first 5 data elements. The Algorithm then maps each data element with 5 standard datatypes - Integer, Float, Character, String or Boolean. A further classification can happen by leveraging modern machine learning methodologies to find the data if it is a Name, Telephone Number, Social Security Number. The data can be then classified as a PII ( Personal Identifiable Information) or a Non-PII. PII information can be tokenized or scrubbed based on the need. Finally, a clean metadata file is generated with information on the data. If you are wondering that can this be done in real-time and on the fly, the answer is yes, it can be done. Yes, a data engineering culture is needed in your organization to do it. This is better than spending millions of dollars on expensive vendors.

Second Stage Methodology: #

The second pass is the clean version of the data and it tracks the data for changes and creates a standardized format of any data so that the data becomes meaningful and distributable to numerous channels in the organization. This will be a true data democratization

For example, if a data is coming to the filter, unchanged, the second pass will ignore it, if a data distribution format is created. If the same data enters the second stage changed it goes back to the first pass to refresh the metadata with changed data attributed.

The second pass is the final form of data and it has the 2020 standard data distribution format: JSON destination mappers like: send it to an API, or send it to a BI dashboard and so on. XML is created so that legacy data sources can be feedback back with clean data if needed.

The Data is a unique and most valuable asset to an Organization and the algorithm mentioned above has to be made relevant to each organization. If this approach is implemented correctly, the time to market and utilize the organizational data improves drastically.

The organization that can comprehend its data and the signals/insights that it generates is the organization that leaps ahead of its competition. Every unicorn startup that would have challenged your industry would have somehow solved this challenge unhouse.
