Microsoft's Copilot Brand Chaos Shows Product Strategy Drift
8+ products named Copilot — Microsoft's brand sprawl shows why focused tools win over platforms.
The signal: Microsoft now has 8+ products branded as “Copilot” across Windows, Office, Azure, GitHub, and more — creating massive confusion even among developers.
Why it matters: When you try to be everything to everyone, you become nothing to anyone. The GitHub Copilot that changed coding forever gets lumped in with Windows search helpers. For builders choosing tools, it’s genuinely hard to know what you’re getting when someone says “Microsoft Copilot.”
The pattern I’m watching: Big tech is making the same branding mistakes with AI that they made with “cloud” a decade ago. Meanwhile, focused tools like Cursor and Replit are winning developer mindshare by doing one thing exceptionally well.
What I’d do with this: Resist the urge to position as a platform that does everything. Pick one workflow, nail it completely, then expand. The companies winning developer loyalty are the ones with clear, focused value props.
