AI Coding Tools Are Breaking Paste — and Nobody's Talking About It

The signal: “Copy Fail” is the top trending thread on Hacker News right now — developers venting about copy-paste breaking inside AI coding tools and agentic environments.

Why it matters: When the most primitive interaction primitive in computing — Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V — becomes unreliable inside your dev environment, you’ve shipped a broken product. Cursor Camp is also trending simultaneously, which tells me the developer appetite for AI-native IDEs is massive, but the execution bar isn’t being met.

The pattern I’m watching: Agentic tools are accumulating UX debt fast. Everyone’s racing to add AI superpowers while basic reliability regresses — this is exactly what happened with early cloud IDEs in 2012-2015, and most of them died not from lack of features but from death-by-friction.

What I’d do with this: If you’re building any developer tool right now, run a “boring reliability audit” before shipping the next AI feature — clipboard, undo history, file saving, keyboard shortcuts. The builders who win the next 18 months will be the ones who made the magic feel solid, not the ones who shipped the most magic.
